How to identify Startup programs - MSCONFIGExcept for Windows 2000, the System Configuration Utility has been included in every version of Windows since Windows 98. It is a handy program that allows users to troubleshoot various startup problems and errors. To open this utility, go to START>RUN and type in the command MSCONFIG. Hit OK and you will see the System Configuration Utility appear in the middle of your screen. The most-often used feature of this program is the STARTUP tab in the upper-right corner. Once accessed, you will be able to see a list of programs that automatically start when you turn your computer on. Have you noticed that your computer seems to take much longer to reach the desktop than it did when your computer was brand new? If you answered "yes" it is almost certainly because more programs appear in this list than there were before, and the reason for the long delay is because Windows has to open all of these when your computer starts up. So in other words, the more programs that are in this list, the longer it will take for your computer to reach the desktop. "OK so how do I know if all of these programs are really necessary, and can I get rid of some to make my computer faster?" Of course you can, but you'd be best advised to identify each program before you uncheck it. If you uncheck a critical program accidentally, your computer might start experiencing loss of functionality, for example you might no longer be able to get on the internet anymore. There are many programs that could end up in your Startup list. Spyware and Adware or common examples of the junk that could find their into your Startup list. Fortunately there is a database that does a great job of helping you decipher the cryptic file names, and will make your job a whole lot easier in deciding which items should remain checked, and which items can be safely unchecked. You can find that database here. |
